What is Email Marketing?
Email marketing is a form of digital marketing that involves sending emails to customers and prospects. It can be used to build an audience, nurture relationships with existing customers, generate sales, or simply keep your audience informed about what’s happening in your business.
The goal of email marketing is to reach out directly to consumers and businesses by providing them with relevant content that will encourage them to take action.
You’ll find several benefits associated with email marketing including:
- Cost-effectiveness (it’s cheaper than traditional forms of advertising)
- Increased engagement (emails are opened more often than other forms of communication like social media)
- Higher conversion rates (people who receive emails from you are more likely to purchase something)
Additionally, it’s easy for small businesses and solopreneurs without websites to set up an email list and start sending out campaigns right away.
There are several types of email campaigns that can be used for different purposes. These include:
- Newsletters, which provide helpful content or updates on company news
- Promotional emails which advertise special offers
- Transactional emails, which confirm purchases
- Welcome emails, which introduce new subscribers to your brand
- Event invitations
- Surveys/polls to gather feedback from recipients
- Lead nurturing sequences designed specifically for prospects at various stages in the buying cycle
- Automated workflows triggered by certain actions taken by users such as signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase
You can use email marketing in combination with other digital marketing strategies to gather momentum, build an audience, and close new clients. Now let’s explore how you can perform email marketing without a website.
Can I Do Email Marketing Without a Website?
Email marketing is a powerful tool for small businesses and solopreneurs. It allows you to reach out directly to your target audience, build relationships with them, and generate leads and sales. But what if you don’t have a website? Can you still do email marketing without one? The answer is yes!
You can create an email list without having a website by using third-party services such as Convertkit, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, and other similar tools.
These services provide easy-to-use tools that allow you to quickly set up an email list, tag your subscribers depending on their actions, and track the performance of your campaigns.
For example, you can create a simple landing page in Convertkit! The tool comes pre-loaded with existing templates with which you can entice people to sign up:
But why would you choose to start your email marketing journey without first creating a website?
First, it eliminates the need for web hosting fees or other associated costs that come with setting up and maintaining a website.
Second, it allows you to start building relationships with potential customers right away since there’s no need for them to visit your site first before signing up for your emails. Think of it as a “minimum viable product” you can use to validate a business idea before you build an entire website!
When creating content for your emails without having access to all the features available on websites like WordPress or Squarespace, here are some tips that will help ensure success:
• Focus on providing value and entertainement – Make sure each message contains valuable information that readers can use in their daily lives; this will keep them engaged with your brand over time. You can also write entertaining emails your audience loves to read!
• Send emails consistently – The more often you email your subscribers, the more exposure they’ll get to your brand, which makes them more likely to buy over time!
• Keep things simple – Avoid long blocks of text by breaking down complex topics into easily digestible chunks. I like keeping paragraphs 1-2 sentences each.
Although it may seem intimidating to do email marketing without a website, with the right tools and strategies it can actually be a better idea to take this approach. Next, let’s look at how to set up an email list without a website.
How To Grow An Email List Without A Website
You can choose from a variety of tools to build an email list without a website. I personally use (and recommend) ConvertKit for solopreneurs and small businesses.
Here’s the usual process I suggest for anyone who’s just now dipping their toes in email marketing.
1. Come up with your offer
Since you’re starting small, you should come up with just one or two offers you want to sell. I suggest starting with an introductory offer and a signature offer.
For example, let’s say you’re a brand strategist. You might have an introductory offer in which you jump on a one-hour call with clients to help them brainstorm a new brand strategy.
But your signature offer may be an entire brand redesign, from palettes to tone of voice all the way to mission statements.
You can also look at my offers as an example. New clients can book a Power Hour during which we come up with a brand-new email strategy. But my signature offer is much more involved — I handle clients’ entire email strategy, from ideation to email copy and publishing.
Coming up with your offer is important because it will inform the rest of the process.
2. Create a simple lead magnet
A lead magnet is an incentive for people to join your email list. You should start with something simple before you go big — don’t pay a designer when you can validate your concept with a simple Google Doc.
Some examples of lead magnets include:
- PDF resources
- Video guides
- Webinars/free workshops
Your lead magnet should work backward from your offer so that you’re attracting the type of people who actually want to buy from you.
For example, a brand strategist could create a template for brand guidelines. In my case, I have a cheatsheet with 30 days of email prompts and swipes.
As you’re developing the concept, ask yourself:
What’s the first thing my potential client needs help with before they come to me for help?
Your lead magnet should help them with that problem!
Need help with this process? I can help you brainstorm some lead magnet ideas if you’re stuck. Book a quick 15-minute call to discuss whether I can help!
3. Set up your ConvertKit account
You have an offer and you have a lead magnet. Now all that’s left to do is set up your email marketing account!
I’ll give you an example process in ConvertKit. However, you can replicate this in most email marketing platforms.
When you don’t have a website, you should have the following in ConvertKit:
- A ‘Landing Page’ in which you advertise your lead magnet
- An automation that triggers every time someone opts into your landing page
- A tag that gets added to new subscribers so that you know where they came from
- A welcome email to provide all new subscribers with their lead magnet
- Optional: an entire welcome sequence
- Optional: a Product in Convertkit for every offer you create
The beauty of a tool like ConvertKit is the ability to create products without needing a separate tool. You can link to your product within every email you send, and people can check out directly!
No need to set up a separate tool, like Shopify or Woocommerce.
Each Product is easy to create and customize.
Until you’ve validated your business and landed a few clients, you can manage your entire business from ConvertKit alone!
FAQs for “Can I Do Email Marketing Without a Website”
Can Mailchimp be used without a website?
Yes, Mailchimp can be used without a website. It is possible to create an email list and send campaigns through the platform without having a website. This is especially useful for businesses that do not have a web presence or are just starting out.
With Mailchimp, users can easily manage their contact lists, design beautiful emails, automate messages and track results all from one place. Additionally, there are many integrations available which allow users to connect with other services they may use in their business such as ecommerce stores or social media platforms.
However, I don’t personally recommend MailChimp. I find it clunky to use and limited. If you’re looking for a free alternative, I recommend MailerLite instead.
How can I legally send marketing emails?
In order to legally send marketing emails, you must comply with the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. This act requires that all commercial emails include a valid physical address, an opt-out link, and clear subject lines.
Depending on your location (and your subscribers’ location), you may also be subject to additional laws, such as GDPR. This law states that you can only email subscribers who have explicitly consented to receiving your emails.
