You can create an email list without having a website by using third-party services such as Convertkit, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, and other similar tools.
These services provide easy-to-use tools that allow you to quickly set up an email list, tag your subscribers depending on their actions, and track the performance of your campaigns.
For example, you can create a simple landing page in Convertkit! The tool comes pre-loaded with existing templates with which you can entice people to sign up:
But why would you choose to start your email marketing journey without first creating a website?
First, it eliminates the need for web hosting fees or other associated costs that come with setting up and maintaining a website.

How To Grow An Email List Without A Website
You can choose from a variety of tools to build an email list without a website. I personally use (and recommend) ConvertKit for solopreneurs and small businesses.
Here’s the usual process I suggest for anyone who’s just now dipping their toes in email marketing.
1. Come up with your offer
Since you’re starting small, you should come up with just one or two offers you want to sell. I suggest starting with an introductory offer and a signature offer.
For example, let’s say you’re a brand strategist. You might have an introductory offer in which you jump on a one-hour call with clients to help them brainstorm a new brand strategy.
But your signature offer may be an entire brand redesign, from palettes to tone of voice all the way to mission statements.
You can also look at my offers as an example. New clients can book a Power Hour during which we come up with a brand-new email strategy. But my signature offer is much more involved — I handle clients’ entire email strategy, from ideation to email copy and publishing.
Coming up with your offer is important because it will inform the rest of the process.
2. Create a simple lead magnet
A lead magnet is an incentive for people to join your email list. You should start with something simple before you go big — don’t pay a designer when you can validate your concept with a simple Google Doc.

Your lead magnet should work backward from your offer so that you’re attracting the type of people who actually want to buy from you.

What’s the first thing my potential client needs help with before they come to me for help?

I’ll give you an example process in ConvertKit. However, you can replicate this in most email marketing platforms.
When you don’t have a website, you should have the following in ConvertKit:
- A ‘Landing Page’ in which you advertise your lead magnet
- An automation that triggers every time someone opts into your landing page
- A tag that gets added to new subscribers so that you know where they came from
- A welcome email to provide all new subscribers with their lead magnet
- Optional: an entire welcome sequence
- Optional: a Product in Convertkit for every offer you create
The beauty of a tool like ConvertKit is the ability to create products without needing a separate tool. You can link to your product within every email you send, and people can check out directly!
No need to set up a separate tool, like Shopify or Woocommerce.
Each Product is easy to create and customize.
Until you’ve validated your business and landed a few clients, you can manage your entire business from ConvertKit alone!

However, I don’t personally recommend MailChimp. I find it clunky to use and limited. If you’re looking for a free alternative, I recommend MailerLite instead.
